What’s Really Important To You?

Far too many of us spend too much time and money on things that don’t matter, that we don’t enjoy, that aren’t important to us, and that bring us very little happiness. We’re so busy that we forget to slow down and really assess what makes us happy and what we want in life.

We can pin pretty quote images that say things like “Live for today” and “How we spend our days is how we spend our life” until our fingers fall off, but do those messages really sink in?

Here are some questions I think about when I feel like I’m losing my grip on my happiness:

  • If I had one day to live, how would I spend it?
  • On my deathbed, what regrets would I have?
  • If money were no issue, how would I spend my days?
  • What do I love to do? What activity makes the hours disappear?
  • When do I feel happiest?

You get the idea. I try to journal about this at least a few times every month to keep myself in line with my priorities. After lots of soul searching, I’ve narrowed my big priorities down to just a few things:

-My relationships with my husband, family, and a few close friends

-My creative work, namely art and writing. If I were to get hit by a meteor right now, my dying wish would be for my book to be published. That’s a priority.

-My health, because it’s hard to be happy and productive when you’re unhealthy. So I work out, I eat well, and I make sure to get to bed on time.

What’s most important in your life? Are you living in alignment with those values?
